Chelsea knocked back again with huge €34m bid for Brazilian
Chelsea are being increasingly linked with Brazilians as the club look to give themselves a new identity following their Champions League win last season. Hulk was the main rumoured target for some time and then Oscar took centre stage, now it could be the turn of Willian to wrestle that from him.
The Romanian manager of Shakhtar Donetsk, Mircea Lucescu, has been speaking to press in his own country about the London club's interest in Willian. He did a TV interview which is currently being picked up by press in Romania with Dolce Sport quoting him as saying "Willian may leave, but we need to find the right price. Chelsea wanted... they offered 34 million euros, but the our view is that is below the current level of the player."
Lucescu went on to say that given that Willian is only 24 (he's 23!) he still feels his future is better with Shakhtar Donetsk and he has plenty of time to move in the future. The Ukrainian club rate him highly and rate him as equal to Eden Hazard in terms of transfer value.
Chelsea would probably be wary of paying that amount for him and may move away from the possibility of a deal. Shakhtar bought Willian in 2007 from Corinthians and he's been the subject of transfer speculation several times.
The quotes from the club's manager do suggest a genuine interest from Chelsea. Alternatively, the name of 'Chelsea' could be being used to push other bidders into action or Lucescu may have been showing off during a TV interview.
